UMTS Troubleshooting

Third Generation Cellular Networks (commonly referred to as 3G) represent the next phase in the evolution of cellular technology, evolution from the analog systems (1st generation) and digital systems (2nd generation). 3G networks represent a shift from voice-centric services to converged services such as voice, data and video.

UMTS is the dominant 3G solution being developed, representing an evolution from the GSM network standards, interoperating with a GSM core network. The 3G implements a new access network, utilizing both improved radio interfaces and different technologies for the interface between the access network and the radio network.

UMTS uses a wideband CDMA technology for transmission, and a more efficient modulation than GSM. This allows UMTS to reach higher utilization, and offer higher bandwidth to the end-user. UMTS also implements an ATM infrastructure for the wireline interface, using both AAL2 and AAL5 adaptations; AAL2 for data, and AAL5 for data and signaling.

UMTS Troubleshooting Solutions

RADCOM provides unique solutions for UMTS troubleshooting and monitoring. Consultants enable users to drill down to each interface, the Network Consultant allows users to monitor their network from end-to-end, and the Omni-Q system  provides real-time traffic analysis, fault detection, troubleshooting and data collection for the network.

UMTS Troubleshooting and Monitoring – Related Technologies

 UMTS Deciphering
RADCOM provides a solution that automatically extracts the keys from the Iu interface and uses these keys to decipher Iub traffic.
 MOS
MOS measurement over the Iu can be used for UMTS voice quality measurement, helping service providers deliver agreed SLAs.
 HSDPA
HSDPA (High-Speed Packet Downlink Access), also known as 3.5G, offers the possibility for a significant extension of UMTS capabilities, urgently needed to meet customer demand for high-speed data services. In addition, HSDPA has the potential to make the network more efficient and therefore decrease operational costs. RADCOM has test solutions for this technology.
